The jungle foliage was photographed while enjoying a zip line near Chang Mai, Thailand. The tiger is fashioned from three different tiger shots. The end result is a tiger picture that is versatile in how it can be cropped, and appropriate for illustrating a wide range of concepts. Tigers make great business metaphors. Who among us hasn't faced the papermonster? Overworked and underpaid, facing deadlines, downsizing, budget cuts; the reasons are many and persistent. I created this image for advertisers, publishers and others who need visual representations of facing too much work and other business challenges. This is a user friendly image that can be cropped as a horizontal, square or vertical. In the stock photo an African American businessman faces off with a monster made of stacks of documents and paperwork. The setting is an office cubicle. This could be either a small business or a large corporate setting.

Creating Monsters With Photoshop
I used Photoshop to composite this monster of paperwork. The model was photographed in front of a cubicle set up in my studio. I also photographed the piles of paper in my studio. The walls in the background were photographed at a tradeshow. It took me about a day to of Photoshop to complete the compositing work.

This funny picture of a Basset Hound in a snow storm was created as a humorous holiday greeting card for Marian Heath greetings. In the greeting card industry the images, or designs, need to be completed about a year before they are distributed so this Christmas card should be out for the 20112 holiday season.

Creating Snow Storms In The Studio
To create the snowy background for this funny dog photo we used powdered sugar! Two boxes of the fluffy stuff were dumped onto a piece of white paper in my studio. We shaped it into mounds and sifted some more sugar on top to soften the clumps. Hey, I was as surprised as anyone to see how much it looked like snow...and with Photoshop we just stripped the Basset Hound into the "snow" to get our basic image.

Stephanie D. Roeser, my partner, did the imaging work. She created the blowing snow flakes in Photoshop. She also made the hat from the scarf which we also photographed in my studio...though it was hanging down rather than blowing out. Puppet Warp in Photoshop provided the contouring for the scarf. I should also note that the scarf was actually just red and white striped...again Photoshop came to the rescue with an adjustment layer (Hue/Saturation) to add in the Christmas green!

To get this intimate view into the wide-open-mouth of a Crocodile I visited a Crocodile farm in Thailand. After the show the audience members had the opportunity get up close and personal with the reptiles and I took the opportunity to grab this unusual angle. I then used photoshop to drop out the background and replace it with black. I also added some subtle reflections to make it appear that the croc was on a shing surface such as in a studio shoot.

Crocodiles, with their gnarly prehistoric look, their many irregular and jagged teeth, and their huge jaws, are ideal for symbolizing threats of all kinds. By placing the crocodile on a black background plenty of room is created for text and headlines, and all of one's attention is focused on the crocodile itself. I find it interesting that with all of the crocodile images out there I have never seen this particular view of one before. Go figure.

As much as we all cringe when seeing certain hackneyed and over-used symbology in stock photography, such as the proverbial handshake photo, certain symbols still work, still work well, and are in need in the marketplace. The trick is to take an old symbol or metaphor and show it in a new, different and relavent way. That is what I have attempted to do with this photo of two men shaking hands behind a translucent glass partition. This is an unusual handshake picture that offers both intrigue and the opportunity of an expanded set of applications.

The handshake photo is a strong and unmistakable symbol for agreement, team work, successful negotiation and a host of other concepts. The message comes through no matter the language or culture. Yet it has been done to death! How can we take that tried and true image and create a stock photo that will serve a needed purpose perhaps better than it has been done before? In this case my opportunity arose when I was shooting in an abandoned office suite. When my model walked behind a backlit frosted glass room partition I was struck by the resulting silhouette. I directed him to shake hands with my assistant behind the glass. The resulting image offers a new take on an old image with some very evident advantages and relevance that can be found in the ambiguity of the photo.

Shaking Hands, Ambiguity And Relevance
The ambiguity of the parties shaking hands in this photo is actually an advantage. Because specifics of the individuals are largely eliminated they can apply to a wider range of people and situations. Further, the murky nature of the image is a natural to illustrate images reflecting on everything from back room deals and political corruption to criminal alliances or, on the positive side, behind the scenes negotiations that get things done. Ambiguity, in this instance, is a strength.

In pondering that question I came up with the idea of putting a scaffold around a very fit and muscular body. The result is a compelling stock photo that portrays self-improvement, building a better body, and, in effect, remodeling yourself into a better you.

Creating A Stock Photo About Transformation, Health And Fitness
To create this health and fitness stock picture I began by photographing a building nearing completion but still surrounded by tall scaffolding. I hired a body builder, an African American man whose body was ripped and the epitome of health and fitness. I photographed him in my studio. I used Photoshop to isolate him from the background and drop him into an image of a sky. I next pen-tooled the scaffolding of the building shot (lot of work there!), then stripped that into the frame around the body shot. I used an adjustment layer to ad some shading and shadows, strip a bird into the image, and came up with a unique image of self-improvement and transformation.

The first time I ever sat down at a computer and tried my hand with Photohsop (way back in 1990) the first thing I thought of was that Photoshop was an incredible tool for creating stock imagery. They Hide Pretty Well, Don't They?

That was a punch line of a joke I remember from grade school, and that came to mind when I was trying to think of an image to create with my archive of Pachyderm pictures. A stock photo like this one relies on several things for its effectiveness. Humor, of course is important, as is the iconic nature of elephants. Who doesn't like an elephant? I think that most of us feel a natural affinity towards the huge beasts...which predisposes us to paying attention to their photographs and perhaps giving a bit more credence to the message than we otherwise would.

To create funny elephant stock photos I usually turn to the archive of elephant pictures I shot in an elephant rescue camp in Thailand. I hired a film crew and had them screen the sun form the elephants with a huge silk providing a soft, yet direction light that facilitates the use of those images for compositing in Photoshop. Then it is largely a matter of creating accurate clipping paths for hard edges and using layer masks for the soft edges. I have to admit, pen tooling the leaves of a tree can be a bit of a pain!

On a recent trip to Mongolia I happened upon this celebratory re-enactment of an ancient Genghis Kahn battle. I was amazed at how realistic it was. The only downer was that I inadvertently erased one of my 16 gig cards in the middle of the battle! I later tried recovery software and did get about 15% of my images back. I don't know if my memory is faulty...but it sure seemed like I lost my best images. Oh well.... It is important to learn from your mistakes, but not to dwell on them! As it is I have a good number of these images online with Corbis...and they are selling.

I did create a version in which the hands are framing a small island with a hammock stretched between two palm trees, but I thought it also important to create a version that allows a viewer to use their own imagination, or a potential licensor to add in a sail boat, dugout canoe, cruise ship or some other symbol of vacations and getting away from it all.

This funny Sumo wrestler picture was created by my partner, Stephanie Roeser. Stephanie and I photographed the Sumo wrestler for an image of a Sumo wrestler as a flying trapeze artist. We photographed the Sumo wrestler in a wide variety of poses for future use, including one of him holding a rope as if participating in a tug of war. Stephanie pulled that image from our archives and stripped him into a office photo I had shot year before. Then we photographed a new model in my studio, also holding the rope, in such a way that we could finish the new office tug of war stock shot. Then it was simply a matter of stripping him into the new image and adding shadows.

On a recent trip to Thailand I photographed crocodiles in a tourist attraction. I hadn't planned on it, but when the situation arose I took advantage of the opportunity. When traveling I try and keep an eye for such unexpected possibilities and have found that by jumping on them I can make travel stock photos that bring in substantial revenue. Though in my case the travel photos don't end up being travel shots at all, but rather concept images usually with a business theme.

Crocodiles Represent Challenge, Risk and Adversity
Back in my studio, browsing through the crocodile pictures, I hit upon the idea of having a business person about to run a gauntlet of the reptiles through an office setting. Crocodiles, I reasoned, would make great symbols of risk and adversity to portray the challenges facing businesses in these difficult financial times. I found a suitable office, with cubicles, in my archives. Being a frugal photographer, at least in these challenging days, I reasoned that I cold make an appropriate businessman for the shot. I had my partner Stephanie photograph me in the studio. Then it just took a few hours to pen-tool the crocodiles, and me, and paste us into the office. I sized the images and positioned them. Next I created brightness and contrast adjustment layers and used them to "paint" in the shadows.

A Stream of ones and zeroes, the binary make up of computing, stream out of a businessman's mouth as he screams out his digital content. This is one of those stock images that I create once-in-a-while that I have a hard time explaining. My gut tells me this will sell, probably for some sort of networking, communications technology, or Internet use. This might be a cloud computing image, or some kind of new digital information or transfer system. The use of a man wearing a tie and in business attire indicates, well, business. The fact that he is not wearing a coat means he is more in the worker bee category than in management. Perhaps he is an IT technician. The binary numbers represent digital communications which can be networking, the Internet, or wireless communications. I created this stock photo with a white background to facilitate easy use.

Easy To Use, Ubiquitous, and Royalty Free Photos
The image is a Royalty Free image on Photodisk with Getty Images. I actually have two other versions, one on black and one with a gradated background. One of the reasons I went with RF was because it gives us the option of including these variations. The image was relatively quick and simple to put together, and is easy to use as it can work with so many different concepts, depending on the headline. I try and create a mix of RF and RM imagery. I prefer RM, but the reality is that RF images provide a steadier income and have a much wider audience. As in the investment world, diversity is one of the keys to long-term success in stock photography.

I actually created this rooster shot way back in 1992 to help advertise SuperMac monitors. Back then a 21 inch monitor cost $5,000.00 and needed a $5,000.00 video card to power it! I did a trade with SuperMac; This rooster image for a monitor and card. I used Photoshop to create the image by combining a sunrise photo with an rooster that I photographed at a petting zoo. I used Photoshop to individually color each portion of the rooster with vivid and intense colors. Eventually PhotoDistrictNews ran an article on a campaign for Fuji copiers that used this image, among others. They quoted the account executive in saying that the bird was some king of rare and exotic rooster. Yeah, a rare chicken indeed, it can only be found in the world of digital existence!

To create this concept stock photo I purchased the components for an office cubicle (used) and set the cubicle up in my own studio. I set the camera on a tripod a photographed our model in each position. That made the compositing task with photoshop relatively simple. One-by-one I just layered the images over each other and erased the parts that I didn't need. Of course, it was a tad more complicated than that...mostly a matter of cloning and some nudging of parts into position with the liquify filter.
I intentionally crafted the picture so that it can work as a vertical, square or horizontal image. I left plenty of space above for a headline and body copy. The model was chosen for a very ethnically diverse look.

A Sumo Wrestler Faces A "Sumo Sized" Sandwich!
My partner, Stephanie Roeser, came up with this idea for a picture illustrate dieting, weight and nutrition issues. In this humorous stock photo a Sumo wrestler takes on a giant sandwich. The setting is indicative of a commercial kitchen. To create the kitchen space we used a black and white tile floor that I assembled and photographed in my studio. The Sumo wrestler came from my archive of Sumo wrestler shots. The stainless steel walls and doors came from an airport elevator (photographed in Buenos Aires), and the round windows came from a actual pair of restaurant doors I photographed in Hawaii (not exactly what one would expect for Hawaii pictures) . Stephanie made the submarine style sandwich. She used Photoshop to composite the image together.

Stock Photos Addressing Weight and Nutrition Issues
This image strikes me as primarily an editorial image. By using a Sumo wrestler rather than an obese person we avoid negative stereotypes (to the extent that a Sumo wrestlers are supposed to be heavy). The point however, that this person has weight issues, is clear. A giant sandwich can represent either excess portions or a healthy alternative to a burger and fries. The headline and body copy will determine the meaning in an otherwise ambiguous image. Ambiguity in a stock photo, as long as it can be made clear by the headline and copy, is generally a good thing allowing the image to be applied to as many situations as possible. The over-the-top-nature of the situation makes for an attention getting and memorable image.

Creating Versatile and Compelling Environmental Imagery
To create this stock photo about environmental challenges I photographed a life ring in my studio. I also photographed the rope suspended by fish line. From my archives I found an image photographed in Myanmar of a drained rice paddy. The earth in the drained field looked like dry, cracked earth, though in reality it was soft mud. When I stepped on it I sank up to mid-shin! Finally, I used Photoshop to turn the life preserver green, add the rope, and composite the results into the rice paddy. I think that is partly because as a stock shooter one so often works alone. You create your images and send them off in the ether. Seldom does one get accolades for a job well done, and completing and image isn't like delivering a job to a client. There is much less of a sense of completion. Your just on to the next image. You just keep pushing that boulder up the hill.

Lest I sound too depressed let me add that there are more than enough pluses as well. I get to do just what I want to do (aside from all the administrative stuff). I get to create the images I want to create, and I get rewarded justly by the market for the value of my work. And honestly, when I create an image that really satisfies me, that feeds my need for creative output, well, that is pretty cool! When I do get into one of those depressive ruts where that boulder starts to feel too big...I give myself permission to either spend some time looking at my "signature" images, or to begin a new image that fires me up. A Gang Stock Photo Shoot and Underwater Meditation
In my last post I shared an underwater minefield, but today's image is the antithesis...a not so nearly explosive image of a woman meditating under water. I created this stock picture several years ago as part of a summer lifestyle shoot. The shoot was quite an undertaking. It was a gang shoot with six photographers, eighteen models, and a whole bunch of support persons including stylists, make-up artists, assistants, a producer and so forth. Our location included a swimming pool, a lake, lots of lawn area and a very nice house.

Images That Transcend The Commonplace
There were enough areas available that each photographer could work independently in their own location. We would work an hour and a half in a given location, then we would all switch. The process actually went very smoothly! I started my first shoot in the shallow end of the swimming pool and decided to shoot this under water meditation photo. I am always trying to create images that transcend the commonplace in stock photo collections. At the time of this shoot I had never seen any other underwater meditation photos, though now I see a few have cropped up.

Underwater Housings, SCUBA Gear, And Lead Weights
I was fortunate to have an underwater housing available from the owner of the property. I used my Canon 1ds (my camera at the time). The owner of the property also provided me with SCUBA equipment. There wasn't anything particularly tricky about getting the image. Luckily the model was up for the image and was quite willing go along with my idea of putting lead weights (from our SCUBA gear) into her bathing suit bottoms to keep her from floating up during the exposure.

Light Patterns, Photoshop, and Underwater Meditation
The light pattern on the bottom of the pool was created from the shadows of an overhead trellis that provided shade to the shallow end of the pool. The Only Photoshop work required was a little color adjustment and contrast control. Voila! A very new age stock photo...underwater meditation! Riding a tiger is an expression that indicates someone has taken on a particularly challenging and difficult project or task. As most of my stock photography is aimed at the business market I decided to illustrate that "Riding The Tiger" in a business environment. This is the first of three tiger riding images I have produced, and the only one in which a person is not actually on the tiger. To create this funny animal and business stock photo I began in a "Crocodile Farm" in Thailand. I didn't have any particular shot in mind, but I thought there would be a good chance of shooting some raw materials that would later serve me well in producing best selling stock photos. I photograph the crocodile show from as many angles as possible. My partner Stephanie also paid for some chicken pieces on a bamboo pole that we held over the crocodile pond in order to get them to jump up (and grab the chicken...something they are very good at!).

To create this funny business picture I first photographed a crocodile at a "crocodile farm" just outside of Bangkok, Thailand. The background windows were photographed in a penthouse in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The floor was photographed in a gymnasium in Berkeley, California, and the model was photographed in my studio in Sausalito, California. If that doesn't make this a "global business" photo I don't know what does! I used Photoshop to composite the various images together.

In today's funny animal pix of the day, Maude the cat earnestly gives advice for a greeting card. This was one of almost a hundred images we made of one particular cat...stage name of Maude...for a line of greeting cards featuring one talkative feline. In this line of card images we photographed Roswell (Maude's real name) who was chosen because of his good looks and his talkative nature. We would need a lot of images with Maude talking...which means shooting him with his mouth open.

Sets, Props, Animal Talent and Greeting Cards
For the Maude series of greeting cards we created 1/8th scale sets: A Cafe/Bakery; A Beauty Salon, A Kitchen, A Living Room and a Bedroom. We photographed the sets, props and animal talent separately and then I Photoshoped the various parts together. We initially created 56 greeting cards, then added more as time went on. Hopefully Maude's advice will bring a smile to your face!

When it comes to creating funny chicken photos, which I primarily do for humorous greeting cards, I recommend that you shoot them in the studio only if you are prepared for a little clean-up. Fowl Stock Photos
This particular hen was photographed for a stock photo image, but was licensed by Portal Publications for a greeting card. To my knowledge, that was the first image of mine that was ever used for a greeting card. Shortly after Portal licensed that photograph I approached them about doing a series called "John Lund's Animal Antics", a collection of anthropomorphic pet pictures in which dogs, cats and other pets take on human characteristics, personalities and situations. Apparently that was a good idea as the project took off and I have been successfully creating the Animal Antics imagery for over a dozen years now.

I believe this is the third version of this image that I have posted on this blog. This version now has a red background and a bone tied to the ribbon in the dog's mouths. I created this version because I felt the bone had more possible stock photo applications than the flying trapeze dogs with a gift had. I think I can finally put this image to rest now!

From the shots of the cattle we have created a series of images featuring cows performing unlikely feats such as a cow jumping over the moon to a cow hang gliding through a cloudy sky.

For Today's Funny Animal Picture we are taking a look at a "Cow Lick" in progress. My partner, Stephanie Roeser, is putting this image of a Holstein cow, licking an ice cream (cone), together to add to our funny cow photo collection. When I glanced over at her work-in-progress I liked it so much I thought I would share her process. She began by perusing through my cow images looking for an idea. When she spotted this cow with its tongue out she knew she had to do something with it.

Illustrations As Place Holders
Stephanie likes to use illustrations as place holders for photos as she works on an image until she either finds the necessary photo or shoots it. In this case she used Photoshop to quickly add the image of a girl with an ice cream cone. Yesterday we stopped at an ice-cream parlor and ordered the ice cream cone, which we shot in open shade right in front of the store. I had the enviable job of licking the ice-cream cone to create the gouge in the ice-cream left by the cow's tongue. Today she stripped the cone out and put it into her image-in-progress. Next step...photograph a girl and a background!

Scaredy Cat or Bulldog: Today's Funny Dog Picture of the Day.

This English Bulldog is a Scaredy Cat!
Scared of getting old I guess! This was actually a very challenging image to put together and took almost three days of Photoshop time! The floor, rug, wallpaper and dog parts were all photographed separately. The bulldog alone required seven different images to piece together. Add in all the shadows, adjustments for the expression, seamlessly putting in the rug, the floor and the wall...and you can see how it might take a while.

Fat Cat On A Scale
This fat cat on a bathroom scale, who btw is looking rather pleased with herself, is one of my newest favorite funny pet pictures in our Animal Antics collection. Making the bathroom pink was the idea of my partner, Stephanie D. Roeser, and I think it took the image to a much higher level.

Humorous Pets and Limited Budgets
Devising locations for our humorous pet pix is always a challenge on our limited budgets. In this case we photographed a bathroom in my art director's house for the location. Her bathroom actually has a wooden floor, but since we wanted a tile one I photographed a roll of linoleum in my studio. The floor was then black and white tile. Stephanie used her considerable Photoshop skills to change the tile floor to pink and white. The finished image is a 52 megabyte file.

Animal Talent, Animal Trainers and Happy Talent
To create this funny cat picture we started from a layout, or drawing. We photographed the cat in my studio being careful to make sure we had each part of the animal talent (cat) in the position and lighting that we would need to composite the image together. It helped that we had an animal trainer on the shoot. She knew the kitty in question quite well and what she would tolerate and how much we could ask of her before she needed a break. We like to keep our talent happy! As I mentioned before, we photographed the art director's bathroom as our location and the linoleum also in my studio.

The Challenge of Photographing Cats
With all of our photography in hand it was a simple matter to composite the image together in Photoshop. I have always found the photography to be the more challenging skill. If you have the right elements the imaging work needs meticulous attention, but you know it can be done. Photographing cats...well...you never know how that is going to end up! Sometimes I think they know exactly what I need and are determined to make sure I don't get it! Ah, but with persistence and patience I know I can outsmart even the craftiest of felines! I think.

It is hard to put my finger on exactly why I enjoy cats so much, but I do! I love taking pictures of them, using Photoshop to create over-the-to funny cat pictures, petting cats, watching them, trying to understand what is going on inside their heads. I am fascinated by where cats choose as their favorite spots to sit and watch the world, or nap. I love their quickness, their stealth, and their simply amazing athletic ability. I spend way too much time wondering why they don't realize that the cat toy dancing in front of them is connected to a pole that is in my hand. Why do they purr? Why do their tales switch to and fro in rapid bursts...what does it mean?

Cats Are Funny
Funny cats are all around us. From the millions of funny cat pictures captured by cat owners and lovers around the globe, to the anthropomorphic cats that I create (as in the above cat, a party animal on the morning after), to the living breathing creatures that call us their own. There are over 30 million cat owners in the United State alone! Cats are funny indeed, and we are all better off for having them in our lives!

A way cool clubbing cat, lounging against a boom box under a disco ball, and wearing shades on the disco dance floor, this orange tabby has both confidence and style! With that "do" he might also be an Elvis impersonator! At any rate, this funny feline, whether at a rave, nightclub or disco, is just too cute!

Creating this complex picture required photos of the cat, the props including the disco ball and the boom box, parts for the creation of the floor, and the out of focus background lights, which I photographed one night in New York's Times Square. Photohsop CS5 was used to put the image together...a collaborative effort between me and Stephanie Roeser, under the guidance of art director Collette Kulak, a senior art director with the Marian Heath greeting card company.

Elephant, What Elephant? Funny Animal Pix of the Day
OK, so technically this elephant might be more in the hallway, or corridor, than in the room, but lurking on the opposite side of a five-foot high cubicle wall still qualifies him of being in the office! These two business people, however, seem oblivious to the huge pachyderm waiting patiently for someone to notice him. Whether it is an elephant in the office, an elephant in the recovery room, a disco dancing elephant, or even a hang gliding elephant, we have it covered.

Elephant Mahoot Training
My partner Stephanie and I stayed at the Anantara Resort in Northern Thailand where they have an elephant camp. We took an elephant Mahoot training course in which we learned a number of ways to mount and dismount an elephant, went swimming in the river on our elephants, scratched their tongues (hey, who knew elephants like their tongues scratched?), and learned commands to have the huge creatures go forward, back-up, turn and stop. To get them to go forward you kick them in the ears and yell bai, bai! I think that would work with just about anybody!

To create this image we first photographed the English Bulldog Puppy in my studio, then the cat. Each animal was photographed in a variety of poses and positions with the layout in mind. Next we photographed a kitchen. Back in the studio again, I photographed a section of pergo flooring. The kitchen scene is actually a composite of the pergo flooring, a door from a second room, the kitchen, and the cat and dog composites. All in all, I would guess that I have just over a day tied up in this photograph.
